Safeguard against Lithium-ion battery fire hazards

Written by Eleanor Bridger | October 25, 2023

Lithium metal ions have become a popular choice for batteries due to their high energy density and low weight. One notable example is lithium-ion batteries, which are used in a wide range of electronic devices, from smartphones to laptops.

While the widespread usage of lithium-ion batteries in various rechargeable devices like golf carts, e-bikes, mobile phones, laptops, and e-readers is convient for users, growing risks have emerged surrounding the technology.

While these lightweight and rechargeable batteries offer extended life and cost-effectiveness, their improper use, storage, or charging can lead to significant damage and potential fire hazards. So much so that some train operators have now banned e-bikes for this reason.

The London Fire Brigade says that lithium batteries are the fastest-growing fire risk in the capital, and reports that in 2023 they are called out to an e-bike/e-scooter fire once every two days.

to safeguard your clients from the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, consider these essential precautions:

Regular Inspection: Periodically examine batteries for dents, deformation, or signs of overheating. If any damage is detected, discontinue use immediately.

Use Official Chargers: Always utilize the charger provided by the manufacturer for the specific battery.

Buy from Reputable Sources: Purchase replacement batteries only from trusted and reliable manufacturers or suppliers.

Avoid Overcharging: Disconnect the battery and unplug the charger once the device is fully charged. Avoid leaving items on charge continuously, especially overnight.

Safe Charging Environment: Charge devices in well-ventilated areas. Avoid covering lithium batteries during charging and keep them away from high temperatures or direct sunlight.

Install Early Warning Systems: Ensure the presence of functioning smoke alarms as part of your safety measures.
