A step-by-step guide

Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

Case study: supporting Neal’s Yard Dairy through a high-profile cheese heist

July 08, 2025

In October 2024, SRIS was notified of a significant and unusual case involving our client, Neal’s Yard Dairy (NYD). The renowned dairy had fallen victim to an elaborate fraud scheme that resulted in the theft of €500,000 sales value worth of premium cheddar cheese.

The scam unfolds

NYD was contacted by an individual claiming to be a representative of a major French supermarket chain. Upon satisfaction after the usual checks, they proceeded with the substantial order. However, it later became evident that the cheese never reached its intended destination - and crucially, no payment was ever received.

The story captured the imagination of the national media, drawing headlines across the UK. It even prompted public appeals from high-profile culinary figures, including Jamie Oliver, for the safe return of the missing cheese1.

SRIS’s immediate response

From the moment we were informed of the loss, SRIS provided urgent support to NYD. An initial call to manage expectations and clarify the terms of their insurance policy was conducted. At the same time, the team started gathering all relevant documentation to support a claim and swiftly arranged an introductory meeting with the insurer’s underwriter to assess the situation.

Formal notification was submitted to the insurer's claims team while maintaining consistent communication with NYD through regular conference calls, providing guidance and reassurance throughout the process.

On-the-ground support

In November 2024, an SRIS claims specialist, Tom Deveson, joined the insurer’s appointed surveyor for an on-site meeting at NYD’s premises. This face-to-face engagement proved highly valuable, with NYD later commenting that the meeting provided essential clarity and helped all parties fully understand the scope and impact of the loss. We continued to work closely with the surveyor following the visit, addressing any further queries.

Resolution and settlement

Just two days before Christmas, we were pleased to receive confirmation that the insurers had accepted liability under the policy. We immediately informed NYD and facilitated the acceptance of the settlement offer.

SRIS continued to liaise with insurers to ensure that the payment was duly issued. Due to the size of the payment, this involved escalating with management at insurers, to ensure that funds were released at the earliest opportunity.

We are proud to share that by January 2025, NYD had received the full payment, bringing the matter to a successful conclusion;

“The SRIS team supported us through the extremely difficult situation with professional and courteous advice and support. Their relationship goes beyond insurance.”
